Touch of Death

<== ( Continued from The Created )

Khol led the party to where the gypsies were having trouble with their broken wagon. The group helped them repair the broken wheel. The gypsy family offered the party to stay for dinner, where stories were exchanged over the campfire. Just before retiring for the night, a beautiful gypsy woman named Dysani gave the group a foreboding tarokka deck reading. The gypsies offered to help the destitute travellers get to one of their desired port cities, as they claimed they knew how to "navigate through the mists".

Har'Akir Desert
In the morning the group set off into the morning fog, as they ventured further the fog grew to swirling mists and vision was reduced to mere feet. All walked cautiously beside the wagon on the strange spongy ground. After a short time, the mists began to burn off from the blazing sun above. The ground below had changed to sand - and the party stood in a desert.

Most of the group were angry and annoyed, while Dysani apologized profusely to the group and her angry brothers.

Off in the distance there was a small village, so the group headed towards it. Along the way they discover a man buried in the sand, his skin dried and shriveled all around him. The colourful gypsy wagon eventually made it into town and all the villagers fell silent and allowed the strangers to pass. The party ventured to the centre of the village where they found a fountain of water. Everyone was parched, so they drank heartily from the wellspring. As they were busy relaxing, a woman wearing flowing robes trimmed in gold, a gold band with a reared serpent, and carrying a staff with a cobra's head on it approached the group. She introduced herself as Isu Rehkotep, priestess of the village of Mudar. The group had many questions for her, and she invited them to come to the temple of Mudar, where she could better answer their questions.

The party accompanied her to the temple where she explained about her people and religion, as well as some of their history and the story of Ankhtepot, an evil Pharaoh that cursed Har'Akir (their land) centuries ago. The villagers believe that Ankhtepot walks the land to this day and his stories are used to scare little children.

Isu revealed the complete tale to the group - that Ankhtepot was indeed and evil Pharaoh, and was obesessed with cheating death - for all Pharaohs that die must serve Ra eternally in the afterlife. For years he was bent on attaining this goal of immortality, his wild experiments cost the lives of many of his priests and subjects. His patientce exhausted, he strode into the Kharn temple, greatest of all in Har'Akir, and cursed Ra for not granting him his heart's desire. Ra answered him, and told him that when he died he would live on, but might have wished otherwise. Ra also told him that for cursing the gods, Ankhtepot would suffer eternally.

That night, when Ankhtepot touched his wife, Nemphyr, she died instantly. Everyone he touched that night died, several of his servants and even his eldest child died by his hand. When the sun went down, everyone he touched died. The bodies were mummified and entombed, but one night his wife returned, but he screamed at her to leave and never return. The preists rebelled and killed Ankhtepot, but still being the Pharoah, they entombed him in the cliff walls near Mudar. Shortly after the funeral, the walls of Ra appeared, cutting off Mudar from the rest of Har'Akir. That all happened many generations ago.

The group went back to meet the gypsies, who were adamant about camping outside the village. They didn't like the cursed villagers, and the feeling was mutual for the xenophobic natives of Har'Akir. They made camp and tried to make sense of this new world they were trust into. That night, the sand beneath everyone's feet stirred and desert zombies burst forth attacking the group! Two of Dysani's brothers were slain and taken under the sand. After all the zombies were slain, the group had an uneasy sleep.

The next day, a very distraught Dysani was determined to preform a fortune telling when the sun was at it's peak to find out how to get out of this acursed desert! A few clues were uncovered through the cards. Meanwhile, the group ventured to the valley of the Pharaoh to discover what lay there. They hired a local villager to act as their guide and set off for the valley. Once they approached, the baying of dogs could be heard in the distance, echoing throughout the caverns. The guide said he would approach no further, for these were the guardians to the Pharaoh's resting place. The group approached anyways, and were swarmed by waves of undead dogs that came down from caves in the valley. They were too much for the group to handle - so they retreated back to Mudar.

That night, there was a whisper heard on the desert winds "Dysani, Dysani..." it called out. Again, the group was attacked by a horde of undead zombies, this time there were too many of them. The zombies slew all of the gypsies and took Dysani off to a figure that stood alone on a dune. The figure disappeared before the group could engage it, but they did see the figure was covered in burial wrappings. The group slept very uneasily this night, as all hope seemed lost!

The next day they went to see Isu to see if she could offer any help or knew anything about the figure who abducted Dysani. When they got to the temple however, Isu was in the middle of a diabolical ceremony to Set - the jackal headed god of secrets and evil. The party questioned her, but quickly the parley resorted to violence. The group felled the priestess, and begun to investigate her strange arrangements on the altar. When they looked back, Isu's body had disappeared! They begun to investigate the temple more thoughly, and awoke a guardian in the lower levels. It was a stone statue of Set, possessed by an evil force. With a mighty swing from it's arm it decimated Kuros in one blow - the rest of the group fled to the roof! The group camped there for the night.

The next morning they resolved to defeat the creature and find out what it was guarding. It seemed to want the serpent staff that Isu was carrying, so they used that as a decoy while others snuck into the room the golem was guarding. Inside they found many scrolls explaining Isu's fall from grace and her plot with a mummy she raised named Senmet, an ancient priest of Anktepot, to leave this acursed realm. Isu's journals explained about the Night of Thoth - which is fast approaching - only then can the valley of the Pharaoh be crossed.

The group rests again and manages to recover Kuros' body. They rest atop the temple of Mudar and recover from their weary adventure.

Ankhtepot's Tomb
Ankhtepot's Tomb
The next day a group of villagers approaches the temple seeking the advice of Isu. But inside there is nothing but a defiled temple and massive blood stain. The villagers head back to Mudar and muster up a small mob. The group decides to head for the Valley of the Pharaoh. They arrive on the Night of Thoth - all the death dogs are silent and the group enters the massive Tomb of Ankhtepot.

Inside they discover many large burial chambers depicting the god-among-men as he was in life. As well, they discover priests of Ankhtepot that have come to life. Senmet and Isu are hiding in the Tomb as well, and in a climactic battle Senmet challenges Ankhtepot who rises from his eternal slumber to fight the usurper. As titanic blows were exchanged between these to forces, the entire tomb began to cumble. The party fled into the desert as the tomb collapsed behind them. It was here that the second of Hyskosa's signs came to pass. "Seventh time the son of suns doth rise/To send the knave to an eternity of cries".

Seventh time the son of suns doth rise
To send the knave to an eternity of cries
The Second Sign
In the distance they saw a shimmering figure... it was the ghostly image of Dysani come to guide them out past the walls of Ra. The party were guided by the spirit past the shimmering wall of heat and into a misty void where bony hands groped at them. After some time, the mist began to fade and they found themselves on a hunters path in the middle of a deciduous forest.
