Night of the Walking Dead

<== ( Continued from Introduction ... the Black Book )

The PCs awoke in the swamp scattered, seperated about fifty yards from each other. Their heads were groggy but they felt lucky to be alive. After re-grouping, they discovered no signs of their horses, but found tracks leading away. Two groups, one they suspected to be the Order of the Black Hand, the other seemed to be Herzog von Danzig and a small group of knights.

Swamp
Foreboding Swamp
The group followed the trail until it disappeared across a murky bog. They constructed a makeshift raft and poles and began to pole across the swamp. Deafening croaks brought them to a small group of giant frogs. These strange creatures were apparently very hungry as they attacked, one of them swallowing E whole! The monstrous frog swam off with it's prize before the party could catch it. The loss of E put a damper on the group's already sour mood, but they continued dutifully across the swamp.

In the coming days, a storm above darkened the sky and made navigation almost impossible. In the second and third days in the dismal swamp, the group was certain they were getting lost. Through the darkness appeared a faint light in the distance. The party approached and found that it was the fire from a camp of gypsies.

Gypsy Camp
Gypsy Camp
The gypsies gave them cryptic messages, and then had disappeared when the morning came. They followed the tracks of their wagon, but they mysteriously disappeared into the swamp.

The group trudged onwards, wary of the fate that was read to them by the Vistana. They came upon a strange hut on stilts with a very strange young man inside. He sat and stared cross-legged on the floor clutching a book of poetry with a dedication "To Luc". All attempts to communicate with the boy failed, but he took a great liking to Elhana. The boy they assumed to be Luc would spout out cryptic rhymes, but nothing else coherant. He followed the companions out of the hut and wherever they went.

The party eventually made their way out of the swamp and into a small village. The storm was still brewing above, and all the village was stragely silent. A funeral procession was in progress, the PCs approached and watched. It seemed as though the coffin was shaking. When the group approached, the priest simply continued with his ceremony, but a ghoul burst forth from the coffin, scaring off the villagers. The PCs quickly dispatched the creature and then took the priest aside for questioning.

The man went by the name of Shaman Brucien and was spiritual leader of this small village called Marias D'Tarascon. He spoke in a strange (french) accent, and his mannerisms were unlike any those the PCs had seen before. The town was named after the Tarascon family that owned the large plantation to the south. Brucien told the party of the surrounding area, and that they were in an area called Sourange. He went on to explain that the dead were coming back to life recently and that was the cause for the chains on the coffin. Upon further investigation around the town, the PCs discovered a few clues to their mystery.

The PCs spent some time talking with townspeople, and spent at night in the local inn. That night a horrible stench was smelled by people in the inn, and a serving girl was murdered. At the scene was found a piece of licorice.

A sage by the name of Mordu studying 'the swamp God' was the prime suspect, as he seemed to be hiding a lot from the PCs. Other people had gone missing in the last few weeks as well, including the Tarascon brothers Jean and Marcel, of whom Luc was their younger brother.

When the PCs asked about the Tarascon brothers, all they found out was that Jean upheld the family business and nobody knew what Marcel did. The group decided to investigate the Tarascon manor near the plantation. Upon their arrival they made a grusome discovery, and suprised a group of undead who were feasting upon a fresh victim.

After dispatching with the undead, they broke into the Tarascon family house in town and found some revealing clues, including licorice root and the Scroll of Hyskosa, but not before the town constable scolded them.

With all these strange happenings, the group went back to Shaman Brucien and he confessed he knew about the Tarascon brothers all along. Marcel had found a strange book in the swamp, and his younger brother accompanied him to investigate. When he read from the passages, he transformed into a hideous undead creature. Luc went mad with the sight and hasn't been the same since. Shaman Brucien put him in the swamp and took care of him.

Another murder took place, but the PCs were quick to react, jumping on the trail of the murderer, and confronting him. The murderer turned out to be none other than Jean Tarascon! Jean blamed himself for what had happened to Marcel and went mad in the process, vowing that he would help conceal his brother's hideous identity. Jean took it upon himself to hide his brother, as well he was the one doing the killing giving the bodies to his undead brother.

The First Sign
At this point, the storm that had been brewing broke, and thick black rain poured down from the sky like oil. From the south plantation, a large group of undead were seen shambling towards the town. The PCs made quick plans to fortify the village, organizing what they could amongst the villagers. Meanwhile, they entered the graveyard where they believed the undead Marcel to be hiding.

A massive battle ensued between the Zombie Lord and the party, but the group prevailed, although the first sign of Hyskosa's Hexad came to pass. "The light of the sky shining over the dead/Shall gutter and fail, turning all to red". The group rested in the Inn, but quickly left the town and headed for Port D'Elhour where they hoped to catch a boat to the mainland.
