FADE IN:
( We see the front of the stables near the inn in the town of Valls. In the background, we see the downtrodden people of Valls going about their business. In the foreground, we see MARTIVIR arranging the equipment on ISK's saddle. )
MARTIVIR (while fussing with the saddle, and addressing ISK): Between you and me, Isk, I think she loves plants just a little too much.
( ISK snorts in approval. )
ENTER TALAMRA
TALAMRA: There you are, Martivir. We are apparently heading to the town of Bloodstone in the mountains. That Lucius fellow is upset that he didn't get to magic his way into the minds of the giants that the townsfolk paid their tribute to. He'll no doubt want to try it again when we get there. He seems to have no respect for a person's privacy! Imagine him reading your mind!
( TALAMRA pats ISK on the nose in a friendly greeting. )
MARTIVIR: I'm afraid he would find little more than the finer points of cold-climate crops in my mind after all those lessons amongst the farms.
TALAMRA (smiling): A little tired of plants, then? Apparently, there will be mines where we're going. Perhaps you should spend some time with Urgoss. He can undoubtedly teach you everything there is to know about rocks. Dwarves have a nasty habit of drinking too much, though, and this one seems no different. Imagine what your mother would say if she saw you trying to out drink a dwarf!
MARTIVIR: Mother wouldn't be pleased at all! She might even chew rocks! I would like to see the mines though -- do you think there will be gems to be found?
TALAMRA: I don't know, Martivir. The people of this land are suffering under the rule of some crazed despot and all you can think about is the size of your treasure pile!
MARTIVIR: I'm sorry. Maybe after we help the people of Bloodstone we can go looking for gems.
TALAMRA: I hope we are able to help. More than we helped here, anyways. These people are upset, but they still see a glimmer of hope or they wouldn't be heading to other places to seek their fortunes. Or trying to stage carnivals for that matter! I fear the people of Bloodstone may have lost all hope. They will need to hear your jokes, Marti, to lighten their spirits.
MARTIVIR: After we help, maybe they'll give us some gems.
TALAMRA: Martivir!
MARTIVIR: What do you think Master Dromar will want us to do when we get there?
TALAMRA: I'm not sure. I hope he has it in mind to do something a little more useful than repair their inns or houses. He means well, but he's far too willing to help anyone who asks. And neither he nor Lucius seem to want to listen to any of our opinions. I'm sure that Kairos feels the same way. Did you hear them this morning? She was just trying to wake them up for the day! At least Master Dromar has sense enough to not drink himself silly.
TALAMRA (after getting on ISK): Go fetch the two boys, Martivir. We'll be Wind Walking to Bloodstone and it will be a long trip so I want you to make sure they've had enough to eat before we leave.
EXIT TALAMRA AND ISK
MARTIVIR (pensive, to himself): While there is life, there is hope!
( MARTIVIR pauses. )
MARTIVIR (quietly, while smiling): And gems!
