Death Ascendant

<== ( Continued from Reunion )

When Drakov's agents began pressing hard on the Orphanage, Lucius and Kuros visited the local barracks and cleared up the situation by posing as members of Drakov's Talons. Kuros was unrecognized, but Lucius was able to pull off the role with his newly acquired suit of full plate. Their ruse would not last long, and the group had other pressing matters to attend to. They group deducded that the Ebon Fold was a mere branch of a more sinister group that had it's base in Darkon to the north. It was agreed that they would try to track the fleeing members of the Ebon Fold north to the bordertown of Stangengrad (also Kuros' hometown).

In Stangengrad, the guards in the town were on lockdown as someone had been through recently and they thought them to be a spy from Darkon. The group was having a hard time tracking down clues as to the whereabouts of any Ebon Fold members. They did meet a young gypsy boy at the gates whose family had been assulted by bandits. Kuros was enraged by the way the people were being opressed, so he marched right into the soldier's district and in particular the Talon's headquarters. The group cautiously fell in behind as Kuros didn't even flinch as arrows loosed from atop fortified houses struck him and he continued on his mission. A massive block-wide battle ensued between the Talons and members of the party. The rouge was struck helpless when an arrow landed in his spine, and the group retreted when Kuros was finally felled by a group of a dozen Talons.

The smoke was still rising from Stangengrad when the group was fleeing into the forests of Darkon to the north. It was rainy and miserable, but the group pressed on, knowing that the Talons would send an expiditionary force looking for them. The group got lost in the forests of Darkon, but by nightfall managed to come across a light in the forest. They sent two scouts ahead in the darkness to investigate. There was a barn and a farmhouse, they investigated the barn first, only to find some of the animals had been killed. A flash of lighting revealed a giant of a man standing in front of the barn doors, but in an instant he was gone.

In the farmhouse there lived an old man and his wife. They invited them in for tea, but they declined the offer. Not five steps away from the farmhouse did they hear a snort from a horse, and a horseman galloped buy lopping off the head of one of the scouts. The other stood in disbelief, and tried to run, but was overtaken and cut down as well.

After much waiting, the group sent two other scouts to investigate the lightsource in the distance. They also never returned.

The last two went to the light in the forest, approaching cautiously. Ahead on the path, they saw a rearing horse and it's mammoth black rider, wielding a familiar greatsword in one hand - it was unmistakably Griever! The body was that of Kuros, but he possessed no head! The horse snorted fire and tore up the earth with it's hooves, charging at the remainder of the group. With one foul swoop, the headless Kuros took the head of the last member of the group.
